Becoming a U.S. Registered Nurse (USRN) is an exciting and rewarding journey filled with determination and hope for a brighter future. However, the path can also be challenging due to its complex and lengthy process. There are various requirements you need to meet, such as passing the NCLEX, completing an English Language Proficiency Test, securing a job offer, and more. But remember, each of these brings you a step closer to achieving your American dream.

Among the essential requirements, obtaining a U.S. visa is a crucial milestone. To successfully acquire your visa, you'll have to go through the application process and attend an interview at the U.S. Embassy. The interview will assess your eligibility for the visa, and having all the necessary documents prepared will help ensure a smooth process.

We’ve prepared a list of the key documents you will need during your embassy interview:

  • Embassy Interview Appointment Confirmation. This document confirms your U.S. Embassy interview appointment. Be sure to print it and bring it with you to the embassy. Before the interview, you must register online, schedule an appointment at the Visa Application Center (VAC), and create an online profile at www.ustraveldocs.com, where you will need to register your visa delivery address and schedule an appointment for your photo and fingerprints to be taken at the VAC. Additionally, you need to schedule your VAC appointment prior to your Embassy interview. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your visa interview.

  • DS-260 Confirmation Page. All immigrant visa applicants are required to complete the Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration (Form DS-260). You can access and submit the DS-260 online through the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website. Once you submit your DS-260, be sure to print the confirmation page and bring it with you to your interview.

  • PSA Documents. You must bring the original copy of your birth certificate and English translation (if applicable). You may also need to provide a marriage certificate (if applicable) and other civil documents from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). If you're a Filipino born outside the Philippines, you must provide a birth certificate from your country of birth.

  • Valid Passport. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the U.S. It will serve as your primary identification document throughout the visa process.

  • Valid Police Clearance. To obtain this, the U.S. Embassy requires a Philippine Police Certificate or National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearance. You must apply for a record clearance from the NBI for travel purposes. It’s worth noting that the clearance includes any aliases, maiden names, birth certificate names, and any variations in spelling from other documents (e.g., birth or marriage certificates), even if they were not regularly used.

  • Cleared Medical Exam. The medical exam must be conducted only at St. Luke’s Medical Center Extension Clinic (SLEC) at least two weeks before your visa interview. Remember, medical results from other clinics or physicians will not be acknowledged by the embassy. After completing the medical examination, the results will either be provided in a sealed envelope or sent directly to the U.S. Consulate; if you received an envelope to carry on your interview, DO NOT OPEN IT. The envelope must remain sealed, and you are required to bring it to your visa interview.

  • Other Supporting Documents (as advised by your agency or employer). Depending on the specifics, your agency or employer may ask you to provide additional documents. These could include a job offer letter, a certificate or proof of passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), or other relevant records to support your visa application.

While the USRN visa application process can be time-consuming and complicated, thorough preparation can make it a smoother experience. Having all the required documents, such as your NBI clearance, medical exam results, and other supporting documents, will make your embassy interview more efficient and increase your chances of success. Keep in mind that each document you gather brings you one step closer to achieving your #AmericanDream.
