Benefits of an EB-3 Visa for Your Nursing Career in the United States

The United States has long been known as a country booming with countless opportunities, offering rewarding career ventures for individuals seeking to build a better future for themselves and their families. One key way the U.S. supports this is through its diverse visa options, each designed to cater to different professional backgrounds and skill sets. Whether you're a priority worker, a member of a profession holding an advanced degree, or a skilled professional, there is a visa tailored to help you make your way to the U.S.

If you're a registered nurse aspiring to advance your career in America, you've likely heard of the term Employment-Based Third Preference Visa or simply the EB-3 Visa. This immigration visa, issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), enables nurses and other professionals to live and work permanently in the U.S. You might be more familiar with it as the green card visa.

The EB-3 visa is designed for skilled workers, professionals, and other workers. To qualify for this visa as a nurse, you must meet several requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in nursing and at least two years of professional nursing experience or training.

  • Successful passage of the NCLEX and certification as a U.S. Registered Nurse (USRN).

  • A job offer from a U.S. employer who will file the I-140 petition, also known as the Immigrant Petition for Alien Workers, on your behalf with USCIS.

Processing the EB-3 Visa can take anywhere from 1 to 3 years, but despite the lengthy wait, many international nurses still choose to apply for it. Why? Because unlike other visa options, the EB-3 provides a range of attractive benefits and opportunities. Below are some advantages of obtaining an EB-3 Visa for your USRN career.

  • Grants You Permanent Residency. EB-3 visa holders are entitled to become Lawful Permanent Residents in the U.S. Once you've obtained your green card; you will have the right to live and work permanently in the U.S. You will also be able to travel freely within the country, buy property, apply for a state driver's license, and access various other benefits. However, keep in mind that you will need to renew your green card after its ten-year validity period.

  • Bring Your Immediate Dependents to the U.S. Having an EB-3 Visa allows you to petition for your legal spouse and unmarried children under 21 to obtain green cards through a dependent visa. Just like you, they will have the right to live, study, and work permanently in the U.S., enjoying many of the same rights and privileges as U.S. citizens. This is definitely a game changer for many Filipino nurses, as it helps them achieve their goal of bringing their families to the U.S. with them.

  • Live and Work in the U.S. Almost Without Restrictions. Once you complete your contract with your initial employer, you are free to work for any employer of your choice. You will not need additional work authorization when changing employers. This flexibility opens doors for career growth, job security, and professional development. While there are certain limitations, you will have significant freedom in choosing your next employer.

  • Path to U.S. Citizenship. After living in the U.S. as a permanent resident for five years, you can apply for U.S. citizenship. The process includes submitting an application, passing a citizenship test, and attending an interview. Once you're granted citizenship, you will have the right to vote, apply for a U.S. passport, and access federal jobs and benefits. By becoming a U.S. citizen, you will no longer need to renew your green card, giving you permanent legal status in the country.

The EB-3 visa can be a life-changing opportunity for Filipino nurses, presenting numerous benefits that can enhance your personal and professional life. As mentioned earlier, one essential requirement for qualifying for an EB-3 visa is having a job offer from a U.S. employer.
